Catch up
It's been a while, let's see if I can remember what's happened in the week since I've blogged.
Oh, I have to share my ghetto stories. I was chosen/told to do one on one work with one of Colleen's little girls, we'll call her S. She lives in the wonderful housing establishment called Rolling Hills, aka the east Winston ghetto. The day Colleen and I were going to go pick up her mom to re-introduce me, we weren't able to go into the street b/c there had just been a shooting. THis happens there all the time, so much so that the police are lazy to respond, if they respond at all. It's one of the nastiest places to live around here. I'm pretty sure I've walked by several drug deals going down. I just keep my eyes to myself and go in and out. Thank goodness nothing has been crazy when I've been there. The mother wants so bad to get out, but there are only like 4 housing places thru the housing authority for low income people, and they're all about the same. It's really quite sad. I'm still working with S 4 days a week.. it's about to get on my nerves. She's a good kid, a little hyper at times (ADHD is her only dx). But, this is not my job, and I'm not getting paid extra to do it. It's hard to come up with things to do with her too, that relate to her treatment plan goals. I might have to ask Colleen to add some new goals so we can do more varied things. I took her to The Children's Museum one afternoon, to the mall, to my house to ride her bike around and we made cookies one day. She's on spring break right now, so we don't have an hour of homework to work on, which is no good. I need to find some educational tasks for her to work on, work sheets or something, b/c she needs help with reading and math.
I babysat 3 days last week, kept me busy & got me some extra spending money, woo hoo! I had to take Miller to cheerleading over near the Farmer's Market on 40 one night, and I sat and watched all the various aged kids practicing their routines, tumbling & dancing. It was fun. There was a little 4 year old girl that was just a flippin' machine. She was doing back flips and front flips and tucks, so cute. The Friday night we watched 2 Mary Kate & Ashley videos. It was great fun!!
Friday we went out to lunch (the whole office) for Colleen's bday. Then Saturday night Alice & I met her and some of her friends in Gboro at Darryls for dinner and then went back to her place for drinks & games. Darryl's no longer has the same flat crackers though. They have some new kind that aren't as good. We played a game called "Spoons" which was a blast, sort of like a combo of Rummi & Spit.
Today actually turned out to be a great day to play in the yard. I was going to go over to mom & dad's to help mom take the cover off the pool but she's not feeling that well so we've postponed it till next weekend. So, instead I mowed my front yard again. With all the rain & sun it's grown like crazy, Onex was getting lost in the grass. Then, tied the doggies up to a fun run & layed in the sun for about an hour. It was perfect weather: a little breeze, not too hot.
The dogs & I nearly got attacked my a freakin' huge great dane today while we were walking!! It was being walked by a woman, I saw them coming up the road, so I grabbed up Indigo to hold her so she wouldn't cause a big ruckus or sneak out of her collar like she's so good at doing, and pulled Melody in close to me and locked her leash. Then we got up on the curb behind a parked car to walk further away from them so we wouldn't have an alteraction. Oh that didn't work. The freakin' woman walking the dog had no strength to hold this gigundous dog and he comes lunging after us, chasing us through someone's yard. I finally was able to pick up Melody after she squealed and howled at the thing for chasing her and took off running. I think I ended up kicking or kicking at the dog, b/c it kept lunging at Melody before I was able to pick her up. Jeez, that pisses me off. Yes, my dogs bark and carry on, but I control them keep them on a short leash, and away from other dogs. If you can't handle a horse sized dog, THEN DON'T WALK IT! Thank god I saw them before we came close or Indigo would have twisted herself out of her collar and who knows what could have happened. I don't know if the great dane was just trying to play or trying to kill.. he was having fits though. It was damn scary, my heart was racing and I was shaking as we finished up our walk. Lordy.
Now I'm just enjoying the rest of my Sunday evening.. looking forward to my 3 day work week this week!

Hey! Do you guys have any kid books that you could take to read with S? I know that just reading with kids can help their abilities a ton, since they don't get much one-on-one reading time at school unless there's some kind of reading buddy program (sadly, they're few and far between). Some people at our church go to one of the local elementary schools for reading buddies, and someone was telling me last week that all the kids with reading buddies are now reading at grade level, whereas the other kids in the class who were struggling before are still struggling. Something to be said for personal contact, eh? Plus, it could take up some time!
I loved your long post. Nicole news is great!!
