Is this legal?
Ok, so a few weeks ago the intelligent W-S/FCS system, on the forecast of "big snow", closed schools almost 18 hours before any precipitation was supposed to begin. Well, the even more intelligent people at Youth Opp decided that since the kids were out of school and they wouldn't be making any money that day, they should close down the program and tell us not to work. Ok, fine. Yay snow day!! But no-no, it wasnt just a snow day... we were forced to use our own PTO (Paid time off) that we get so little of. (After working for 6 months, you get 6 days off. The first 6 months you work there, you take days without pay if you can't/don't come to work. Then, after a year you get another 8 days. Then, and only then, after you've given a year to the company, do you being earning more PTO at a rate of 5 hours per pay check.. the biggest bunch of bull shit ever!) Anyway, almost everyone there is a newbie, having been there between 6 months and a year, so none of us have very much time to take off, and they forced us to use it on a day we could have easily done planning, caught up on paperwork, or even gone to see families. Because, as usual, there was no bad snow. So, my question to my readers is: Does anyone know if this is legal for them to do? I've looked it up on the labor website, but it's not clear in their FAQ section whether it is or not. I have a phone number to call, I just need to do it, and hopefully talk to a person so I can spell out my question specifically to a HUMAN.
Grumble.
Grumble.

Sounds questionable, and certainly obnoxious and unethical, even if it is legal. I think most companies can set their own policies about how workers can use leave, but you wouldn't think they'd be able to force you to take leave that's usually voluntary. Bitches. Good luck finding an answer.
Okay, I have to be like Lauren and include my word verification word: hjzhppie. It's like a cross between hippie and shizzle. It makes me laugh.

That really does blow! Unfortunately I don’t think there are any laws that govern the practice. Labor Laws require you to be paid for work done and fairly compensated, but since the idea of time off and PTO are benefits, and not required, it would be like changing your health insurance by increasing your deductible. When I worked for the City of Greensboro, if we earned comp time one week, we were forced to take the time off that week in the cycle if we wanted to or not… It was just their policy – which sucked, but there really was not anything I could do about it. Either way, their policy really sucks!!!!!!
